This collection contains three splendid example of Handel's choral music - Saul, Alexander's Feast and The Choice of Hercules.
All three are marvellous in their way, and are full of joy and sorrow.
The performances are uniformly excellent.
They date from Philip Ledger's time as director of music at King's College, Cambridge.
The choir feature on all three items, with the English Chamber Orchestra on Saul and Alexander's Feast, and Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields on The Choice of Hercules.
Former King's choral scholar Robert Tear is a soloist on all three, along with other distinguished performers like Heather Harper and Thomas Allen.
Under Ledger, the King's choir take on a bright, slightly hard edged tone.
Ledger's empahsis on intonation, ensemble and especially diction means they are always relaible performers on any recording, and they do themselves proud on these recordings.
The choir is lively, exciting and sensitive.
The orchestras and soloists also give strong account of themselves.

The oratorio of "Saul" (HWV 53) is a dramatic oratorio in three acts written by Handel in 1738 with a libretto by Charles Jennens.
Taken from the First Book of Samuel, the story of Saul focuses on the first king of Israel's relationship with his eventual successor, David; one which turns from admiration to envy and hatred, ultimately leading to the downfall of the eponymous monarch.
The story closely follows the Biblical narrative of the relations between David and Saul.
The overture is the longest of all the Handel introductions.
It is in four movements, the first an Allegro, the second a Largo, in which the organ is used as a solo instrument, the third an Allegro, and the fourth a Minuetto.
It is an exceedingly graceful and delicate prelude, and makes a fitting introduction to the dramatic story which follows.
The characters introduced are Saul, King of Israel; Jonathan, his son; Abner, captain of the host; David; the apparition of Samuel; Doeg, a messenger; an Amalekite; Abiathar, Merab, and Michal, daughters of Saul; the Witch of Endor; and the Israelites.
It includes the famous "Dead March", a funeral anthem for Saul and his son Jonathan, and some of the composer's most dramatic choral pieces.
Saul was first performed at the King's Theatre in London on January 16, 1739.
The work was a success at its London premiere and was revived by Handel in subsequent seasons.
